Resume tips from Glassdoor

Even though Republic Resumes is closed until 11 October, Glassdoor has some good resume writing tips. I’ve edited this and made a few suggestions.

Emphasise accomplishments, not responsibilities

This requires some creative thought. Start making a list of the major responsibilities you have or had. Then, write next to each of those responsibilities your accomplishments. Where possible, use figures. Figures are magnets for recruiters.

These will be the bullet points you use in your resume.

The first is boring. The second is a winner.

  • Handled accounts for public relations firm.
  • Managed 10 accounts in excess of $5 million annually and came in under budget by 10 percent every year.

Not only is the second statement rich in detail, it packs more punch.

Make it about two pages – unless you’re an executive

Don’t fall into the trap of trying to fit every single internship, skill, and little detail into your resume. A pruned down resume gives your big accomplishments and roles a place to shine. Keep in mind that time is something recruiters don’t have much of.

Adjust your resume for every job

Set yourself apart from the pack by tailoring your skills, experience, and interests to every single job you apply for. DON’T do the lazy thing and send off your old, unmodified resume. That’s a recipe for failure.

Add hyperlinks

As hiring managers are reading resumes exclusively in digital format, adding a few hyperlinks is a good strategy. Ensure your use of hyperlinks sells you.

Put your best foot forward
