Issues for the long-term unemployed

Patty took a package from the SA public service and hasn’t worked for over two years. She was an executive assistant and is now long term unemployed.

She sent her old resume to me. It was full of cut and paste duties and needed reformatting and restructuring as well as some achievements.

I told her how I’d improve it to give her a fighting chance to get back in to the workforce again.

I never heard from Patty again. Such is life.

I didn’t tell if you were unemployed for more than one year, the chances of getting another job fall by 40 per cent.

Patty has been out of work for two years.

That’s not good.

Because she worked in the public service, recruiters may knock her back from corporate jobs.

Different cultures, different processes and they speak a different corporate languages.

She might also find it hard getting back into the public service due to cost cutting.

It’s also much harder to snag a job when you are unemployed rather than having a job.

Recruiters like to know you are job fit and job ready.
