A while back, I wrote a blog about a minority of career changing prospective clients who believe resume writers can work miracles and magically get people jobs.
Resume writers deal with specific jobs, not general career aspirations.
They get insulted when I don’t take them on and tell them they don’t need a resume writer. They need a career guidance specialist.
If the ‘body’ of their career is so different in experience and capabilities from their aspiring new career, a new resume, even if it’s written by Shakespeare, won’t work.
For example, if you’ve been working in a call centre for ten years and you want to be an investigator – a term so broad you could drive a truck through it – the ‘go to’ person is a career adviser.
Career advisers examine one’s current experience and examine ways it can be used to target a new career.
They look at competencies and capabilities and map those over to the new career.
It usually involves a combination of retraining, doing an internship and volunteering.
We’re not in the business of ripping people off or working miracles.
